You make a post announcing something you're super excited about implementing, and the comment section then fills up with people asking about totally different things or getting mad because you're not doing exactly what they wanted. If you post textual updates about progress, it takes away from development time trying to do that on a regular enough basis where, again, they won't get nervous and accusatory.Īside from that, it's just incredibly difficult to be a creative developer when ideas are routinely dumped on by patrons because they were hoping for their own personal pet idea to be implemented. If you wait more than a couple of months between releases, they get nervous and accusatory. Patrons want you to release updates as often as possible, even if it means not taking the time to make a really good update. This leads to a situation where you feel as a developer that you have to keep thinking of new ways to update a game perpetually, even when you are ready to start on a new one. In my experience, patrons are highly reluctant to a developer finishing up one game and starting on another within the same Patreon account. There's this sort of idea there that even if your game is technically "done", people still want you to keep developing it. It's been interesting but way too difficult to properly work when using it. It's now roughly three years later and we're getting ready to pull the plug on it. I posted in 2015 (in one of those threads mentioned above) after having used Patreon for a short while. ![]()
